2016-2017 Notice for Statewide Tests
Dear Parents/Guardians,

Here is some important information about this school year’s state tests: Each spring, Oregon students in grades 3-8 and 11 participate in state assessments in English Language Arts and Math. Rather than multiple-choice questions, today’s tests ask students to explain their reasoning and, often, write out their answers.  The new assessments measure more complex skills such as critical-thinking, writing, and problem solving so that schools and parents can assess whether children are on-track to graduate from high school ready for college or a career.

Students will take the state tests again this coming spring starting March 6, 2017. While the tests in English Language Arts and Math cannot tell us everything about your child’s academic progress, the results do act as a snapshot of your child’s strengths and areas for improvement in those subject areas. The tests help our school district get a more complete and accurate picture of how all Highland students are performing. As we assess curriculum, review instructional strategies, distribute resources and work to improve our educational system, our students’ performance overall is a big factor in planning and decision-making.

Reedsport School District has had a good participation rate on state assessments as both parents and staff have found value in this “point-in-time” check on the progress of our students and our educational system. However, parents in Oregon have the option to opt their children out of state assessments this spring. Should you wish to opt your child out, please read the information carefully, complete the form, and return the form to the main office of your child’s school by April 3, 2016.

Please see the Parent Opt Out FAQ if you have general questions or want more information about the Oregon State Assessments.

If you have additional questions, please contact your child's building principal.

Sincerely,

Beckie Lupton
District Test Coordinator

Volunteer background checks in our district!

Volunteer Policy

Volunteers are a valuable resource in a school district; therefore we seek out and encourage partnerships with the community to create a pool of volunteers.  If you are interested in volunteering at our schools or in the classrooms, or to chaperone field trips, we welcome you and want to let you know that this process is in place.  All volunteers within the district are required to complete a Criminal History Verification of Applicants/Volunteers form and subsequent background check.  This information is kept strictly confidential as required by law and will be valid for two school years.  Obviously this is an effort to ensure the safety of each student as we make this one of our top priorities.

The background check will take approximately two business days.  No one will be allowed to volunteer without the completion of this form and background check.

Click here for the Criminal History Verification of Applicants/Volunteers form.  After completion, please return the form to the District Office staff.

Thank you in advance for helping to keep our students and staff safe.
