TEACHER
Special Education
 
POSITION:  The Reedsport School District will hire a full-time licensed teacher to work with special needs students in a classroom setting.  The primary responsibility for this position is to teach Communication Skills, Social Skills, Functional Academics, Self-Management, Home Living Skills, Community Access Skills, and Vocational Skills to a small group of students in a 7-12 public school setting.  The teacher will be supported with not less than two, full-time instructional assistants and the District will provide clerical support staff.
 
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Meets the standards of Competent and Ethical Performance as outlined in Oregon Administrative Rule (OAR 584-020-0000 to 584-020-0045).  The following are examples of principle duties; however, any one position may not cover all duties listed and examples may not cover all duties an employee is expected to perform.

  • With an awareness of learning differences, work effectively and collaboratively with students, staff, and parents, modeling and teaching respect.
  • Establish clear objectives and create long- and short-range plans for instruction to meet the individual needs of students in the areas of academic and social growth.
  • Using research-based curriculum, develop and carry-out clear, organized, sequential lessons and learning activities suitable for qualifying individuals with learning disabilities.
  • Administer various tests to determine students’ academic and social growth.
  • Diagnose the instructional needs of all students and devise differentiated, appropriate learning activities for each student.
  • Assess and provide feedback to students, classroom teacher(s), parents, and administration regarding student progress, expectations, and goals.
  • Train and coordinate the work of instructional assistants in providing an effective school program which addresses the needs of individual students.
  • Support classroom teachers by providing materials, resources, accommodation/ inclusion ideas, consultation, and other appropriate support.
  • Develop and maintain accurate, complete, and confidential case management records as required by law, district policy, and administrative regulations.
  • Provide thorough and timely reports, data, and other information as requested.
  • Facilitate annual IEP meetings, and 3-year evaluations, as a means to measure student growth.
  • Serve as a home-to-school liaison, providing methods to reinforce classroom goals in the home environment.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
 
GENERAL PERFORMANCE REQUIREMENTS:
  • Perform duties in a courteous and efficient manner that builds confidence and enhances learning.
  • Maintain regular attendance and be punctual.
  • Respect confidential information and the privacy of students, staff, and parents.
  • Reflect upon own teaching performance and accept and utilize suggestions and feedback.
  • Attend and participate in staff meetings, relevant school/district meetings, and designated professional learning.
 
QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Valid Oregon teaching license with preference in handicap learner, exceptional, or severe exceptional learner endorsement and appropriate grade level authorization.
  • Familiarity with a variety of age-appropriate instructional, assessment, and behavior management strategies.
  • Familiarity with Oregon special education and federal IDEA requirements.
  • Ability to direct students in a positive, productive, and clear manner.
  • Ability to direct the work of instructional assistant(s).
  • Good computer skills with document management organization strengths.

Job Description
 
INSTRUCTIONAL ASSISTANT-Needed at Highland Elementary FTE1.0 (32 Hrs.per week)
 
JOB DEFINITION: This position will work alongside our Special Education Teacher leading small groups and providing learning support to students. Candidate should have strong skills in working collaboratively with others and building relationships with students.
 
REPORTS TO: Building administrator, teacher, or media specialist.
 
JOB CHARACTERISTICS: Employees in this job classification process information and provide assistance to staff and students under the general supervision of teachers and the building administrator. Employees may be considered in a high-risk category for exposure to body fluids and human excrement.
 
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
 1. Assists students in their understanding of instructional concepts by reemphasizing the basic elements of teacher directed activities.
 2. Provides students with additional practice on identified skill areas, as per the teacher's guidance.
 3. Assists with the correction of student work under a teacher's direction.
 4. Following the teachers guidance, keeps records and charts of individual students.
 5. Assists with the supervision of students both inside and outside of the classroom as appropriate.
 6. Assists with preparation of teaching aids and materials.
 7. Maintains confidentiality of work-related information.
 
 
 
OTHER POSSIBLE FUNCTIONS:
 1. Under the teacher's guidance instructs and supervises students with basic computer usage and keyboarding skills.
 2. Types and photocopies materials.
 3. Collects and accounts for monies received (lunch, book club, field trips, etc.).
 4. Assists classroom teachers and students as they utilize the resources of the media center.
 5. Fulfills other educationally related duties as assigned by the teacher, media specialist or building administrator.
 
 
JOB QUALIFICATIONS:
Knowledge of the following is preferred:
 1. Record-keeping systems.
 2. Computers and other equipment.
 3. Instructional procedures.
 4. Student behavior and discipline.
 
 
Ability to:
 1. Work well with students and staff in school setting.
 2. Understand and carry out oral and written directions.
 3. Use independent judgment.
 4. Supervise students.
 5. Interpret and apply rules, regulations and policies.
 6. Multi-task.
 
EXPERIENCE:
 1. Demonstrated competence.
 2. Experience working with students in a school, church or youth group organization is preferred.
 
EDUCATION:
 1. High school diploma or equivalency,
